How to make the most of the Amalfi Coast

3rd January 2022

In the summer of 2022, the ever-graceful Star Clipper will ascend the Italian coast in all her glory to complete one of her most popular itineraries in the tall-ship specialists’ sailing calendar. Having had a hiatus from this part of the world, Star Clipper’s return to the Western Mediterranean is one to be celebrated. With ports of call steeped in historical charm, the Amalfi Coast transports us back in time to a world where tall-ship sailing vessels slot into the coastline’s horizon like the missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

Whilst rest, recuperation and relaxation are a vital ingredient when on board, we have taken a look at some must-dos when experiencing these beautiful itineraries to complete the recipe for a memorable and mesmerizing trip.

Take a tour to Pompeii

When visiting Sorrento, make sure to tick Pompeii off the bucket list. Just 17km away from the port, a city frozen in time until the 18th century waits to be explored. When archaeologists extracted fascinating details about the devastating Vesuvius eruption in 79AD, they opened up a time capsule and once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about life from almost two millennia ago. From theatres and mansions of the rich, to more modest homes and the last paying customer’s money at the market, there are very few opportunities to immerse yourself so heavily in such a historical world event.

Discover the Duomo Di Amalfi

Amalfi Cathedral, or the Duomo Di Amalfi, is a medieval Roman cathedral situated in the Piazza del Duomo. A breathtaking structure that dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries, dedicated to Apostle St Andrew whose remains lay there, the cathedral draws in many visitors every year. Fronted by 62 wide, steep steps and a marble and stone façade, the structure’s beauty overwhelms the eye line and becomes almost impossible to believe that such a building still stands in the modern day. The eye-catching colourful bell-tower is a feature found only found in Southern Italy, and encapsulates the charm and grandeur this part of the world is so well known for.

Pop into Positano

From Amalfi, you easily can catch a bus, ferry or taxi to the ever-popular Positano. A beautiful cliffside village draping the shores of the Amalfi coast, Positano promises to deliver breath-taking moments and beauty that makes the rest of the world stand still. Having spent most of the 20th century as a poor fishing village, Positano began to attract a large number of tourists in the 1950s after John Steinbeck wrote in Harpers Bizarre ‘Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.’

There’s so much more to be enjoyed on these itineraries, such as Ponza. Known as ‘Capri without the tourists’, Star Clipper gets a front row seat at one of the most popular summer destinations for Italians. Whilst technically skimming above the Amalfi Coast, this destination is to be celebrated as a true Italian experience.
