The Mediterranean is open for sailing – Part 2

13th April 2017

Following on from last week’s blog which focussed on some of this season’s best cruises in the Western Mediterranean, this week’s focus is on the delights of the Eastern Mediterranean. From the glistening sea of the Adriatic to the golden islands of Greece, the Star Flyer will be operating a range of itineraries to this stunning part of Europe throughout the summer.

Commencing on the 6th May 2017 with the seven-night Northern Cyclades itinerary, the Star Flyer will sail within the region until early October. We take a look at two of the best Eastern Mediterranean itineraries to keep an eye open for in 2017.

Northern Cyclades – Star Flyer – 6th May 2017 – 7 nights

Patmos

There are few things more impressive than the Acropolis of Athens, which you will have the chance to admire before embarking on your cruise and really sets the tone for what is to come. After a full day at sea, you will arrive in the Turkish port of Kusadasi, which provides an ideal point of access to the world-renowned archaeological site of Ephesus. This ancient site with its excavations will enable you to admire the wonders of a bygone civilisation.

Over the course of the next three days, you will get to visit three stunning Greek islands – each of which will charm you with traditional white-building towns, welcoming locals and golden beaches. Patmos is the first of these new islands and is thought to be where St John the Divine had his apocalyptic revelations and the cave in which he resided is now a Monastery of the Apocalypse – housing many priceless artefacts.

This is then followed by Amorgos, which is home to the high, sea-facing monastery of Hozoviotissas – one of the most spectacular sights in all of Greece. This 50-room monastery is home to only a handful of monks, but the view they can enjoy would suggest they are among the luckiest monks on earth. This will then be followed by the cosmopolitan island of Mykonos, which is known for its beautiful beaches and colourful harbour.

Although it may look like just a rock on first impressions, Monemvasia soon reveals itself after traversing a causeway and passing through the iron fortress gate. This beautiful destination is a fine example of perfectly preserved Byzantine architecture – filled with red-tiled roofs and twisting alleys that will pursue your intrigue. Amazing to think all of this can be crammed into seven days.

Greece, Montenegro & Croatia – 2nd September 2017 – 11 nights

Kotor

In addition to the Northern Cyclades itineraries, the Star Flyer will also operate a few longer itineraries – one of which is the 11-night Greece, Montenegro & Croatia sailing. Sailing out of Piraeus (Athens), this extensive cruise will take you on a journey of the Greek Islands and the Adriatic.

After leaving the Greek capital, you will get to visit the enchanting islands of Mykonos and Santorini – both of which will charm you with their blue-domed architecture and relaxing beaches, which provide the perfect place in which to soak up the Mediterranean sun.

No Star Clippers cruise would be complete without experiencing the delights of traditional tall ship sailing, and a full day at sea will take you to a bygone era of exploration. This will conclude upon arriving into the intriguing Greek port of Katakolon, which will enable you to visit the mesmerising and fascinating landmark of Olympia. This is where the ancient Olympic Games were held from the 11th Century BC onwards and remains, to this day, the site in which the Olympic torch is lit.

A relaxing stay in the gorgeous island of Corfu precedes a visit to the Balkan nations, which commences with the fjord-like landscape of the Montenegrin city of Kotor. You may not have heard of this city prior to visiting, but upon arrival you will be truly amazed by the breath-taking scenery on offer. This complements the stunning walled town, which extends into the mountains and will provide you with mesmerising views of the surrounding area.

This sets the tone for the ports that follow, which will take you on a comprehensive tour of Croatia’s islands and coastline. Starting in the impressive walled-city of Dubrovnik, you will be able to admire the city from above as you follow the designated path. This city has become famous in recent years for providing the backdrop for a range of popular film and TV franchises.

The red-tiled rooftops you see in Dubrovnik are synonymous across all of Croatia, as you will find out in Korcula, Hvar and Mali Losinj. Each of these destinations is easy to explore via a network of narrow streets and are filled with stunning architecture and warm, inviting beaches. Your cruise then concludes with perhaps the most stunning destination on earth, as you will find out when you sail directly into the floating city of Venice. This mesmerising city is made up of a plethora of architectural styles which, somehow, manage to blend together seamlessly.
